BULK Space Artist Residency

BULK SPACE is a collective of artists and arts organizers based in Detroit, MI USA whose mission is to uplift the craft of marginalized voices by taking up space. Our programming includes exhibitions, residencies, public workshops and the production of publications that highlights the work of Women, LGBTQ, Black, Indigenous, People of Color and disabled folks. 

BULK SPACE Artist Residency (BSAR) is for emerging Detroit based artists and curators. For our first year of residency, we are focusing on specifically artists based in the city limits of Detroit, Highland Park, and Hamtramck.

We will be selecting four residents for a virtual, six week residency that will take place from May 17th - June 27th, 2021. Residents are required to have access to the internet for at least two hours a week during the residency period. BSAR does not have an application or residency fee but housing and materials are not provided. Due to COVID-19 we are currently not offering studio spaces.

The BULK Space Virtual Artist Residency includes:
  • Virtual studio visits with each BULK member
  • Virtual studio visits with a guest curator
  • One zine or small book published through BULK Space 
  • Artist Honorarium of $1000, unrestricted
  • A programming event (performance, workshop, etc.) with the support of BULK Space. The program does not need to be executed within the residency frame but will be discussed during this time. 

ELIGIBILITY:
  • Be 21 years or older
  • Be a current resident of Detroit, Hamtramck, or Highland Park
  • Have resided in these areas for at least three years prior to application deadline
  • Plan on remaining here for at least a year following

We are not considering applications from students working toward any degree at start date of the residency program.
